Two weeks of Silence

Tue Aug 12, 2008, 1:51 AM

I've read this week an interesting article in 'Der Spiegel' (the most intelligent weekly journal in Germany in my opinion) about the stress with the web. Our information society creates stress with new information every minute, and researchers have found  employees being less effective while working in a state of multitasking between their usual business, using the net, writing mail and so on. There was a pilot scheme to shut down all lines of information for two hours on a eight hour working day, and all employees told the researchers they felt eased from this flood of information.

It's funny to read this article right now 'cause I had this feeling quite often in the last years. I was really addicted to the internet some years ago, plaing roleplaying games via net was all I did for a long time, all friends I had were from the net - and I often abandoned everything else for this, but I didn't got happier with it. It was quite like being tied up, but without the relief of finished projects.
It took a long and hard process to kick this habit, and sometimes, when I had a long day at work with several informationfloods over my head I even don't want to talk to my boyfriend at home just to breathe again. The last two weeks, as I took a nearly complete break from the internet, were a measure to get fresh air in my heart's lungs again. This was the time to visit the 'Drachenfest 2008', a really big LARP convention with over 5000 other people from all over Europe, and having a full week to play at my Computer (at home without the net) and draw again as much as possible.

Well, I'm feeling good now, those vacancies could have lasted longer, but well, that's how it is - the good stuff always has its limits. It was time enough to draw the first pages of my new comic project 'The Agency' and get the ideas into pictures - but first I'm going to finish 'A Special Day' (to fight down my tendences to start many things but never finish them). Hope you had some good days, too - I'm back in business (and this were many words to tell it^^).

Good read and couldn't agree more.

"... (to fight down my tendences to start many things but never finish them)."
I fight with this same problem a lot, mainly with ideas I want to do. I am finally starting to make myself finish projects, but now I have multiple projects to finish that I have started.

I think it's a problem many creative persons have - there are always many more ideas than time to give them all the credit they deserve. This was a thing I'm still learning the hard way and I have the slight feeling I'll never succed ;)
